The little baby is about 15.7 inches long and weighs almost three pounds... comparable to a head of cabbage. But that cabbage is also doing a lot of bumping around lately!!! After some patience, Bill got to feel movement for the first time for himself on Tuesday. We had a bit of a whirlwind week. I did the glucose test on Wednesday as I was planning... and found out Thursday that I failed again. I have gestational diabetes. Click on the link for the specifics but basically because of the pregnancy, my body isn't processing insulin properly, leading to high blood sugar levels. If not managed properly, those high levels can hurt the baby.
So, just hours after finding out, I was sitting in a class learning about what I need to do to help the baby and my body. I was handed a blood glucose monitor, shown how to prick my finger and told what I need to do to keep my levels where they need to be.
It was good to hear the diabetes will go away when I give birth, but was even more comforting to know that I didn't do anything to bring it on. Apparently it's just the way my body works - so I'm likely to have it for any future pregnancy too. The confusing part, though, is that it can be genetic. At this point, I don't know anyone in the family who has diabetes or had gestational diabetes.

Is there a reason unborn children are compared to food? I think so.
