It took some time, a couple blood tests and weeks of a really cranky baby... but I think we finally figured out what's up with Alexis.
About a week ago, the doctor found that she is allergic to milk... which apparently is different from being lactose intollerant. So, she's been on a new formula (Neocate) for the past week and while it's going to take some time for her stomach to realize it can handle the formula, it seems like it's already helping. It's a little more expensive than the nutramagen, but we're going to take this one step at a time. Maybe we can back down to the nutramagen once her system is better and even try breastmilk at some point if I can get enough milk out of my diet... it's in EVERYTHING!
So basically, now that we have that figured out, it's supposed to help her skin, her digestion, her spitting up, her blotchy face, and her crankiness. She was also having a hard time gaining weight and wasn't wanting to eat much lately, which really had the doctor concerned. But she's really chowin' it down this weekend! I'm just glad that after months of trying so many things, trying to get information from our families and watching her continue to be uncomfortable that we're finally on the right track.
I'm having lunch with a friend this week who has a son who is also allergic to milk to get her point of view. The hospital she works at also just happens to be starting a support group for families with food allergies this month. So Bill and I both plan on going to that. I spoke with my college professor's wife this weekend too who's a dietician and she suggested talking with the dieticians at our local grocery store for more counseling on what foods to avoid & what doesn't have milk in it. We just have a lot of research to do and have to become expert label-readers... but I'm confident we can do it!
There's a good chance she'll grow out of it, possibly by the time she's 2 years old, so that's good news too.
