Washington, D.C.: Day 3

The third day out East was a total adventure!  First of all, the drive to the Chesapeake Bay was beautiful!  I wish I had taken photos along the way.  I don’t know why I didn’t but the scenery and houses were amazing.

Can you tell where we were headed?

IMG_8995That’s Tad, the First Mate on our deep sea fishing excursion!  He got the poles all ready for us…

IMG_9014 IMG_9019 … and then we watched and waited for the fish to bite!  It really was that easy.  Awww: the newlyweds! (with a waving glove)

IMG_9022 IMG_9028 Look who reeled in the first one!  That’s a keeper!

IMG_9030 IMG_9040 IMG_9042We just took turns spotting poles and reeling in fish while the captain took us around and Tad kept our hooks baited with worms.  This was the one Bill pulled in… I believe that was a “Spot”.  Then it was my turn – I caught a Mackerel with sharp pointy teeth!  Think mine was a little bigger.  :o)

IMG_9056 IMG_9088 IMG_9095Hey! Look who picked up the camera again!  Had so much fun fishing I would recommend it to anyone.  The scenery was great, the water was great and as long as you don’t have an uneasy stomach, it was fun riding the waves when we got to the rough parts.  I think the captain was actually TRYING to make one of us yack.  Not this one!

Then we got to watch First Mate Tad clean the boat.  The guys got a kick out of watching the girls watch FM Tad.

IMG_9097 IMG_9098That’s our catch!  You can’t see it all though.
Captain: What are you going to do with all of it?
Us: Eat it!
Captain: Tonight? All of it? (jaw just about dropped)

We figured, sure, why not?  Fish feed at the house and we had to eat it because how in the world were we going to get it back to South Dakota?

IMG_9105 IMG_9115The boat above is a $5 million boat sitting in the harbor near where the guys “park” their boat.  And apparently that’s a big enough deal for these guys to pull out their phones and snap pictures of it too!

When we got back to the dock, they cleaned ALL the fish for us… in record time, I’d say!  They bagged it by fish type in gallon bags; we had five!

IMG_9119 IMG_9121So, we WERE crazy to think we were going to eat all of the fish that night.  This is just SOME of it!!!  There were different ways to cook the different fish.  The guys suggested grilling a few of them, including my mackerel.  The others got battered and fried in a pan on the stove.

IMG_9131I don’t know that I’ve eaten THAT MUCH fish in one sitting!  That’s my mackerel in the middle.  It was TASTY! We cooked up some tater tots for good measure, but really, didn’t have much room for them!

So, what happened to the rest of the fish?  Well, we packed it on ice hoping the rest of the family could eat it when they got to New York for the next lag of their trip (which Bill and I did not take… will explain in next post).  But that didn’t happen.  So they found a cooler, packed it with fresh ice and the fish and actually shipped it home.  The Chesapeake Bay fish are still sitting in Tom & Rose’s freezer waiting to get eaten!  We have yet to plan the second fish feed!
